Growing food can be a win-win for humans and the farm’s wild ecosystem if done thoughtfully and carefully. We use regenerative practices to tend this farm in a way that gives back to the soil and the ecosystem we depend on.
We cover crop extensively to sink carbon into the soil and to feed the soil microbial life. We practice diligent crop rotation, use copious amounts of local compost, and are constantly experimenting with beyond organic fertility practices. We do not spray or use harsh chemical fertilizers or pesticides, even organic ones. In our 5 years of operation at Green Valley, our practices increased soil organic matter by 150% and earthworm and soil mycelium abounded.
We also make a commitment each year to plant and steward native shrubs, insectary plants, and young oak trees to help give back to the landscape and help our non-human neighbors thrive. CSA members can donate directly to this effort via our Native Habitat Restoration Fund upon sign-up.
Farms can build soil and sequester carbon; they can be healthy, thriving, diverse ecosystems — all while bringing abundant food to our tables. Our goal is to share this reality, along with pints of fresh strawberries, with our CSA members.
